Everyone in my family has an unbelievable sweet tooth and resisting sweet treats – especially chocolate – is not something any of us are good at. So, when I decided to cut back on some things (salt and sugar mainly) to improve my health and have a more balanced lifestyle, I found that cutting back on sugar was the biggest challenge I had to face.
It was easy enough to replace the sugar in my tea with, for example, honey but it wasn’t as easy to replace the products I use that have sugar in them already, like chocolate bars, cakes, cereal etc. Back when I started cutting back on sugar there weren’t many alternatives available and the ones that did exist were just not pleasant to eat or cook with.
Luckily there are a few new alternatives available now, with one new product hitting the shelves recently: Cadbury Dairy Milk 30pc less sugar. A lot was written about the announcement and as I’m quite the chocolate lover I was quite curious about this chocolate bar as I had been replacing my milk chocolate bars with dark chocolate ones – which I often find way too bitter to enjoy.
So, to put this new chocolate bar to the test and to show that cutting back on sugar doesn’t mean giving up on taste, I used them to make chocolate brownies with no added sugar whatsoever. Brownies are very easy to make but it was quite the challenge to balance the flavour and texture when you’re not adding any sugar. To replace the sugar I only used the sweetness from the milk chocolate, some honey and butter. I added a little bit of unsweetened cocoa powder to give some contrast and added some dark chocolate shavings on top. The result? The perfect low sugar weekend treat!
If you want to tweak these brownies you can stir in some raspberries or walnuts as they are sweet ingredients and give the brownies another texture and flavour. Low sugar chocolate browniesPrint Recipe
- 300g Cadbury Dairy milk bar with 30pc less sugar
- 250g butter
- 120g all-purpose flour
- 6 medium eggs
- 5 tablespoons of honey
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 30g unsweetened cocoa powder
- dark chocolate shavings for decoration
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5
Chop up 100g of the chocolate into small pieces and break the other 200g into big chunks. We’re going to use the small pieces to stir into our batter at the end, which will result in these lovely gooey chocolate pieces in our brownies.
Melt the butter at low heat in a small pot. Once it’s half-melted, add 200g of the chocolate and stir in well. Once both the butter and chocolate are melted, take the pot off the heat to cool down a little bit so that our eggs don’t turn into scrambled eggs once we add them.
Mix the eggs in a bowl with a fork and then stir them into the butter/chocolate mix. Add the cocoa powder, honey, baking powder and flour and mix everything together. Don’t over mix the brownie batter, as that will make the brownies tough.
Stir in the 100g of chopped chocolate, give it a good stir with a spoon and pour everything onto a baking tin lined with baking paper. Sprinkle half of the dark chocolate shavings on top and bake the brownies in the oven for twenty minutes, check to see if it’s still runny in the centre. If they are, cook them for another 5 minutes at a time.
Once they are done, let them cool down for 10 minutes. Sprinkle the rest of the shavings on top. They will melt just a little bit on top of the brownies, giving them another indulgent layer to bite into. All that’s left now is to slice up the brownies.
